Vintage Rolex watches have been selling for quite a premium and now we have a spectacular announcement. The Holy Grail white gold Rolex Daytona, believed by connoiseur's to be the only such example made of the precious metal, is sold by Phillips at The Daytona Ultimatum auction on 12 May in Geneva for astonishing 5,937,500 CHF.
Believed to be the only one of its kind in the world, its rarity stems from the fact that its case is made entirely from white gold – many believed that Rolex only ever made the iconic Daytona in yellow gold or stainless steel variants.
Nicknamed ‘The Unicorn’ in watch circles, this 18-carat 37mm white gold Daytona was produced by Rolex in 1970, likely by special order. The watch also features caliber 727 and a black "sigma” dial with white gold indexes, consistent with the case metal. The bracelet, white gold with a bark finish, is not the one that originally came with the watch.
